Overview
Nine handheld classics. Free, no sign-up, no downloads.
Snake, Brick Breaker, Brick Racer, Brick Stack, Pong, Tanks, Road Crossing, Invaders and Flappy, all on the same 10 by 20 brick screen as the handheld, playable in any browser and installable so it works offline.
It is live at retroclassic.games, and listed as a game inside the Lagos Life Games app.
Challenge
Nine games that feel like one toy, and a reason to come back tomorrow.
Each game had to feel like the handheld: the same grid, the same chunky bricks, the same beeps, while working with a thumb on a phone and a keyboard on a laptop.
And a game you play once is forgotten, so it needed something new every day, and a way to see how you did against everyone else.
Solution
One engine, a daily challenge, and a world leaderboard.
Every game draws through one shared engine on a 10 by 20 grid, so a screen style changes how all nine look without touching how they play: 3D bricks, neon arcade or classic LCD, each with its own synthesised sound.
The daily challenge seeds every game from the date, so everyone gets the same game, level and speed that day, and a small serverless API on Vercel with Upstash Redis keeps the world leaderboard. It is plain HTML, CSS and JavaScript with no build step, and a service worker keeps it playing offline.
Results
Live, and in an app of its own.
Retro Classic Games is live at retroclassic.games. Inside the Lagos Life Games app the whole arcade is one listing, and its daily challenge scores make up the leaderboard there.
